Dr. Bae-yong Lee was named the 13th president of Ewha Womans University in August 2006, and has been committed to educating women leaders in the coming era of gender equality. Marking its 121st anniversary this year, Ewha Womans University is a female educational institution with the longest history in Korea.  After the inauguration, Dr. Lee announced a plan to build a large education and research complex in Paju under the "Initiative Ewha" slogan. She has been leading globalization projects including the Ewha School of International Studies in Scranton College and the Ewha Campus in Beijing University.

Dr. Lee graduated from Ewha Womans University as a history major. She went on to study at Ewha for her master's degree, and then acquired her doctorate in Korean history at Sogang University. She served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Director of the University Archives at Ewha Womans University. She was also the President of the Liberal Arts and Science and the Lifelong Education Institute at the school. She served as President of the Chosun Dynasty History Association.

Dr. Lee has authored numerous books, including 'How Korean Women Lived in the Past?' and 'Women in Korean History.' She has been recognized for her contributions to establishing the study of Korean women in history. She founded the Korean Women's Historical Studies Association, paving the way for full-fledged research on Korean women in history. 

양성 평등 시대 여성리더 양성 

공동조직위원장 이배용 이화여대 총장

2006년 8월 이화여대 제13대 총장으로 임명된 이배용 총장은 양성평등시대를 이끌어갈 여성을 길러내는 데 앞장서고 있다. 이화여대는 올해 창립 121주년을 맞은 한국에서 가장 긴 역사를 자랑하는 대표적인 여자대학이다.

그는 총장 취임 후 '이니셔티브 이화'를 슬로건으로 삼아 경기도 파주 교육연구단지 조성계획 발표, 국제학부를 확대한 스크랜튼 대학 설립, 베이징 대학 이화캠퍼스 오픈 등 이화여대의 국제화에 박차를 가하고 있다.

그는 한국 근현대사를 전공한 역사학자 출신으로 이화여대와 동 대학원, 서강대 대학원에서 한국사를 전공하고, 1985년부터 20여년간 이화여대 사학과 교수로 재직했으며, 한국여성연구원장, 이화여대 인문과학대 학장, 평생교육원 원장 등을 지냈다. 또한 '우리나라 여성들은 어떻게 살았을까', '한국 역사 속의 여성들'과 같은 저서를 통해 역사 속에 묻혀 있던 여성을 발굴하며, 한국의 여성사를 학문분야로 정립했다는 평가를 받고 있다. 2004년 한국여성사학회를 발족시켜 여성사 연구의 체계적인 공동작업을 가능케 했다.
