Welcome Message from the Publisher-Some Expectations on WWPFG

I have the pleasure of welcoming all of you who have come a long way from home and abroad to visit the City of Light, Gwangju, for the 2007 World Women's Peace Forum Gwangju(WWPFG). The Women's News feels greatly honored and privileged to have this opportunity to sponsor the Forum, and I look forward to your continued support and care for the paper which has devoted itself to exploring a new horizon as a feminist weekly.

Gwangju has holds a significant stature in the history of Korean women. This southern Korean city has been a mainstay for the women's movement from the nation's opening up of its doors in the 19th century to the democratization movement at the close of the 20th century. In the middle of the 1980 democratic uprising, the city of Gwangju etched 'the spirit of Gwangju' in the memories of women involved in the women's movement and, provided an important springboard for the women's movement.

Following from this spirit, I earnestly wish this Forum could bring about the following fruitful outcomes.

First, I hope the Forum will be a celebration of peace for all Korean women. The Forum should be regarded as a venue for the whole women's community of Korea in such a way as for the next one to be held at a national, and eventually at a global level.

Second, the Forum will hopefully be an opportunity for the Korean women's movement and Women's Studies to upgrade their international capabilities. Korea successfully hosted the International Interdisciplinary Congress on Women(IICW) in June, 2005, in which over 3,000 delegates participated, and has exercised a significant influence as 'a holy land of women's studies' in the international community of Women's Studies. Based on such accomplishments, the Forum will have to produce substantial results through in-depth discussions.

'The Gwangju Declaration' to be adopted on the last day is expected to reflect the spirit of the times which could underlie feminism, the human rights movement and the world peace movement

Let me close with the hope that the Forum will transform the troubled image of Gwangju into a fresh image of a future vision for women, and a holy land for the peace movement.
