During her welcoming remarks, president Lee said, "Your 30 years of guarding Ms. is the same as my 14 years of struggling to keep The Women's News alive, and my heart wrenches with emotion at having met someone who experienced my hardships before me." Lee was so overcome with emotion that she could not go on. Steinem, also teary-eyed, said, "I have been dreaming of the day when feminist journalists of the world could meet and share their experiences. I knew I would be moved and excited by your passion as soon as I stepped in through the door, but I never knew the tears would come so soon."

Women participating in the event watched as Lee and Steinem warmly embraced each other, and applauded the tireless efforts of the two women who had kept the feminist journalism paper and magazine going in the face of financial difficulties.

Emphasized Steinem, "People often develop prejudices because they have been misinformed by historical theories and literature. So feminists have to garner all the passion, excitement and anger we have to go back to questioning the very basics." She went on to tell her audience, "There were times when I wondered if what we were doing was crazy, but the fact that you and I are doing the same things shows that we are on the right track headed for the truth. I hope that The Women's News and Ms. will become a community that values and encourages each other."

After the breakfast meeting, Steinem visited The Women's News office to take a look at the newspapers that had been published since the paper's founding and to give words of encouragement to the reporters. During her visit, she consented to becoming an honorary advisor to the paper, and exchanged signed certificates of consent with president Lee.
