It is often difficult for women to say what they really think,
and it is even more difficult for women's voices to be heard. In
one of her early books, 'Talking Back: Thinking Feminist,
Thinking Black' feminist scholar bell hooks (she does not
capitalize her name) talks about women's communities and
women's speech:
“I can remember watching fascinated as our mother talked with
her mother, sisters and women friends. The intimacy and
intensity of their speech--the satisfaction they received from
talking to one another, the pleasure, the joy. It was in this world
of woman speech, loud talk, angry words, women with tongues
quick and sharp, tender sweet tongues, touching our world with
their words, that I made speech my birthright--and the right to
voice, to authorship, a privilege I would not be denied. It was in
that world and because of it that I came to dream of writing, to
write.”
A few pages later, hooks discusses the importance of speech:
“Moving from silence into speech is for the oppressed, the
colonized, the exploited, and those who stand and struggle side
by side a gesture of defiance that heals, that makes new life and
new growth possible. It is that act of speech, of ‘talking bac
k’, that is no mere gesture of empty words, that is the
expression of our movement from object to subject--the liberated
voice.”
여성들은 하고 싶은 말을 하기가 어렵고 자신들의 의견을 인정받기
란 더욱 어렵다. 여성 학자 벨 훅스(자신의 이름을 소문자로 표기)는
초기 저서 '말하기: 여성으로서, 흑인으로서'에서 여성공동체와 여
성으로서 말한다는 것에 대해 다음과 같이 서술하고 있다.
“나는 어머니께서 외할머니와 이모들 그리고 친구들과 얘기하는 것
을 감탄하여 지켜보곤 했다. 다정하게 때로는 격렬하게 얘기를 주고
받으면서 그들은 서로 기쁨을 나누며 보람을 느꼈다. 여성들의 말
로만 가득 찬 세계 즉 목청을 높인 말로, 화난 말로, 따끔한 말로,
달콤한 말로 우리들에게 영향을 준 이들의 세계 안에서 나는 내가
타고난 권리인 바 하고 싶은 말을 하고 글로 표현할 권리를 행사하
기로 결심했다. 바로 이 세계가 존재했기에 감히 글을 쓸 꿈을 품
게되었고 결국 글을 쓰게 되었다.”
몇 쪽 뒤에서 훅스는 표현의 중요성을 논한다.
“억압받는 자들, 제국주의의 지배를 받는 자들, 착취당하는 자들,
연대하여 투쟁하는 자들에게는 침묵에서 벗어나 자신들의 생각을 표
현한다는 건 새로운 삶과 발전을 가능케 하는 일종의 저항이다. 표
현한다는 행위는 빈말로 지껄이는 무의미한 행동이 아니라 당하는
자의 처지에서 벗어나 주체자가 되어 해방된 우리의 목소리를 갖게
되는 것이다.”
