“Misery Index for Workingmoms (Journalist Cho Hye-young, Park Gil-ja, Lee Ha-na, Kim Soo-hee, and Hee-sun),” a special coverage reported by the Women’s News(“WN”) won the honors award for the Press category at the Gender Equality Award ceremony hosted by Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and organized by Korean Institute For Gender Equality Promotion and Education.

At the 15th Gender Equality Award ceremony, held at the Ferrum Tower in Jung-gu on the 11th, WN Integrated Media Bureau Contents Team was awarded with the honors award, a Ministerial prize of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. Since last year, WN began quantifying and measuring pain factors for working moms, and announced the “Misery Index of Workingmoms,” while running a series of special articles, titled “Creating a society that records zero in the ‘Misery Index of Workingmoms,‘ shedding light on this issue. WN continued its effort in the campaign to “lower the Misery Index of Workingmoms,” suggesting various policies to support work-life balance for women and pioneer social change.

The dean of Hanyang University Graduate School of Journalism, Kim Cheonggi, who is also the Chairman of the Awarding Committee for the Gender Equality Award, evaluated that “Women’s News researched and reported on the difficulties that working women face and suggested a realistic solution.”

“It’s the people who change the world as we dream of, and it’s the media and education that change the person,” said Cho Yoonsun, Minister of Gender Equality and Family. “Broadcasts, reports, and education programs with the right awareness of gender equality touch our hearts more than any advertisements or campaigns, and they will play a bigger role in spreading gender equality.”

The grand prize for Telecast category of Gender Equality Award went to KBS 1TV News9’s year-round project, “A Country where I Want a Baby.” The grand prize for the Press category went to “Why Women’s Job Today,” a special report by Kyung Hyang Newspaper based on the “2013 Report on Women’s Jobs.” The Top Prize for Education category went to Yongdong Elementary School teacher, Yoon Changgeun, who developed the gender-equality program.
