Jeju-do, the island of goddesses built on the labor of Haenyeos (translator's note: women who dive into the sea to gather sea food), has begun its ascent as the center of Asian women's cultural movement in the 21st century. And at the heart of the island will be the Women's Theme Park, the site for which was recently confirmed. In commemoration of the site selection, The Women's News carried out a tree-planting ceremony on the site.

The event unfolded amidst the welcome and support of several figures, starting with opening remarks by The Women's News president Lee Gye Gyung and followed by Bukjeju-gun county magistrate's congratulatory remarks and words of encouragement from Ms. founder and feminist activist Gloria Steinem.

The femininity of Jeju's natural environment and the potential for feminist culture hidden in the island's everyday life were the reasons for selecting Jeju-do as the Mecca of Asian feminist culture and arts in the 21st century. The Women's Theme Park will not only plan and host various culture and arts events but also take charge of building a residential complex for women artists and other arts and culture facilities.

Lee Hye Gyung, representative of the Women's Culture and Arts Planning, welcomed the construction of the Park as "a meaningful project that will provide the opportunity for Jeju-do to be established as the center for feminist culture."
