The First Azumma (Korean word meaning 'married woman') Marathon, held on May 20 inJamshil, was a resounding success, with a turnout of over 7 thousand people including runners, their families and public figures.

 

At the Opening Ceremony, Minister of Gender Equality Han Myung Sook said, "The people's impression of Azummas have changed dramatically. I hope that today's event will serve as an opportunity to build solidarity among Azummas." President Lee Kye Kyong of The Women's News also encouraged participants, saying, "I can feel the fervor of the Azummas here today.Azummas are the driving force behind social change. Let's all do our best today."

The flame-bearer was Park Hye Won, who says that marathon helped her regain her health after being diagnosed with a congenital disease of the cerebral blood vessels. The torch was lit by the Minister of Gender Equality and the President of The Women's News.

Before starting off, all the participants strengthened their resolve by shouting together, "Long live Azummas, the leaders of Korea! Long live Azummas, running for our own health!" Then at ten o'clock, the police music band, a mounted party, and a Korean folk music band led the runners through the Peace Gate of the Olympic Park, amidst the cheers of families and friends.

Moon Ki Sook, recipient of the 10 km course Grand Prize, surprised onlookers by completing the 10 km course in 35 minutes and 35 seconds.

The participants went home after several hours of healthy fun, already looking forward to the second Azumma Marathon.
